Stoxnet Track Of The Year 2021 2022 2023
The first Skegness track was at an airfield near Butlin's Holiday Camp in 1955. It was intended to run every Saturday night through the summer season, but only two meetings were held.
The current stadium was built in 1977 on the site of a former World War II facility close to Orby village. A ground controlled intercept radar station was set up on the site in January 1941. Initially a mobile site, with the equipment mounted on trucks and trailers, while a permanent site was built. Designated as RAF Orby, it opened in January 1943, and was mothballed after the war. It reopened as a base for the Rotor air defence radar system at the beginning of the Cold War. The operations building was partly repurposed as the toilet block when the stadium was built.
Greyhound racing was introduced in 1981, and ran intermittently until 1991, when a dispute between the greyhound promoter and Trackstar saw the dogs leave for the final time.
Speedway was introduced in 1997, and the track widened and changed to shale. However, the speedway did not last, and the track was reverted to tarmac for 2004.
Current owner and promoter Rob Speak took over in 2016 and since then has been refurbishing the entire stadium.
