The UK Open Championship began life in April 1990 when the former BriSCA Supreme Championship took on a new lease of life. The chosen format determined that the winner would be decided on an accumulated points basis across qualifying heats and a Grand Final.
The entry would be split into four equal groups, each of which would race twice in qualifying heats, with the top 24 points scorers transferring straight to the UK Open Championship final, a further 8 cars would transfer through from a consolation event. With the event being won on points, the winner of the Grand Final may not be the same driver who was crowned UK Open Champion.
Since this opening event in 1990, the format has changed as has the staging venue, but now a settled format and venue, Skegness Raceway, has seen this title become much sought after in the early part of the BriSCA F1 calendar.
