In the later part of the 1970s, closer ties were developed with the Dutch stock car racing scene, which led to British drivers racing in Holland, and Dutch drivers racing in England. This led to the introduction of the European Championship.
With the move in the 1990s towards having Saturday and Sunday meetings at the same track, Northampton introduced the European weekend, which remained there until it moved to Mildenhall in 2023.
In 2005 the European Championship was awarded the red and yellow checked roof, which led to it being considered the fourth major title.
