Open only to drivers who start the season graded as Novice, there have been several ways of awarding the title over the years.
The title and trophy originated at the Longdendale Supporters Club in 1972, and decided by a vote by club members.
For 1973, there were qualifying heats at Nelson and Northampton, then a final at Northampton.
From 1974 to 2001, the title was either on a Novices only race, or the the highest placed novice in a White Top race.
After that, the title was based on points. For 2002-2008, only points at National Series rounds counted.
For 2009 onwards, all meetings were counted.
In 2019, a points multiplier was introduced, with higher graded drivers scoring more points due to starting further back.
