Dave stopped racing after an injury at Hartlepool in 1981. He presented the trophy at the annual BSCDA dinner dance; the winner decided by a vote by members. Up to 1985, the winner was the driver voted to have made the most impact. From 1986 onwards it is awarded to the driver voted Entertainer Of The Year. Dave passed away in August 2017. The trophy has continued to be presented in his honour.
