Defending champion John Lund started on row 2, after an uncharacteristic hesitation in the closing stages of the Crewe Semi-Final, which Ian Higgins had capitalised on and taken the win. But he nearly had to forfeit his front row start after blowing his engine up in practice. In a parallel with the 1976 event, the underdog on the front row was loaned a top spec car by one of the sport's top drivers, as Ian lined up in Lund's spare car.

Starting on pole for the second year in a row was Frankie Wainman (212), by now the second most experienced driver on the grid after Willie Harrison, but when the green dropped Frankie seemingly wasn't ready, and the outside line got away first. Higgins led, from Peter Falding, Dave Berresford, John Lund, Chris Elwell, and then Frankie in sixth place after the first lap.

After a few laps, Falding put Higgins wide to take the lead, with Berresford and Lund also moving up. After a few more laps, Berresford made his move and hit Falding wide to go to the front of the pack. If anything, this served only to wind Falding up, and within a couple of laps, he caught Lund and shunted him aside and then launched Berresford into a parked car and out of contention.

Lund stalked Falding for a few laps and then when he felt the time was right, waded in with one of the best stock car moves ever seen. Lund was some distance in arrears as Falding entered turn 3, and the 53 car was still at full speed well past the braking point of the turn. The bumpers connected and the 33 car was launched straight on into the fence, bouncing off in a shower of sparks. In a masterclass of car control, Lund braked hard on impact to avoid going in the fence himself, and then looking like he had all the time in the world, turned the bend and simply drove off into the sunset to victory.
