Originally a horse trotting track which was built in 1940 and known as Marshall Park. It had a suface made of cinders from the local Provan Gas Works. The site changed hands at the end of the war and the new owner built grandstands around the track and renamed it Stepps Stadium.
A stock car track was built inside the trotting track in 1954. It did not appear to draw the same crowds as Motherwell or Edinburgh, and there is relatively little known about Stepps as it did not receive much coverage in the local press.
In the early 1960s, F2 racing started in Glasgow, but this was at White City Stadium, near Rangers football ground.
The stadium closed in August 1962 and stood empty for a number of years.
