Real name Matthew H Pinkterton. The Pinkertons were rhubarb farmers in Renfewshire Scotland. There were 4 brothers. John, Jimmy, George, and Matthew, who was known as Chuck. John died young, the others all rode speedway for Glasgow Tigers.
George was a Flight Lieutenant in 602 Squadron and is credited with shooting down the first or second enemy aircraft in World War 2. Two were shot down over the River Forth on 16th October 1939, and it wasn't clear which was first.
The family is descended from Allan Pinkerton, who emigrated to America and formed the Pinkerton National Detective Agency.
