The Cornish Stadium at Par Moor was constructed between 1946 and 1948 by the Luke family, and opened in 1949. With help from St Austell Motor Club, it would become one of speedway's legendary stadia, regularly attracting huge crowds.
The 360 yard track home to the local speedway team, known as first Pixies and then Badgers, before they settled on the name Gulls.
Stock car racing was introduced in 1955 and ran for four seasons. However, a dispute with the speedway promoter led to racing coming to an end in the summer of 1958, with the remaining dates being run at a makeshift track down the road at Carlyon Bay.
Stock cars returned in 1964 after the departure of The Gulls, but this time it was F2. In 1969 promoter Trevor Redmond began laying tarmac. This was done in stages, starting with the insides of the bends, and the outside of the bends the following year. The whole track was tarmac by 1971, ready for the 1972 F2 World Final, won by Northern Ireland driver Jimmy Murray.
The stadium closed in 1987 and is now the site of Stadium Retail Park
