Stock Car Racing, which has taken a firm hold in London, came to Portsmouth on Saturday night. The track was only moderately full when racing began. There was a considerable time-lag between races, and the scheduled programme of five events, two of them heats and two semi-finals, was cut to three. In the first two, there was little excitement. Several cars became entangled but the mass pile-ups characteristic of the sport were lacking. The last race, however, produced some real thrills. There were collisions at corners, with cars overturning and others becoming locked with them as drivers struggled to avoid further crashes. S Gregory, the one-strong Bristol contingent, was the winner, with Maurice Hutchins (Portsmouth) second and Roy Dando (Bristol) third. Joan Starling (Southampton), the only woman entrant, was present but did not compete. (Portsmouth Evening News, 25th April 1955)
